Over the past two or three years, several players from a multitude of countries — citizens, groups, businesses, and governments- have banded together to achieve a common goal: eliminating single-use plastics.
Their cause is well-intentioned. Single-use plastics account for a significant proportion of plastic that never makes it to landfills. Moreover, specific single-use plastics, like those made from PET, can only be recycled a handful of times. Thus, it is ideal to eliminate single-use PET water bottles and replace them with plastic-free aluminum or home and garden compostable ones.
Unfortunately, many groups fail to see that not all single-use materials cannot be eliminated. The unavoidable single-use products we're talking about are those used for perishable food packaging.
With the aid of refrigeration, air-tight plastic packaging prevents food from spoiling, keeping it fresh for several days. This plastic-refrigeration tandem has contributed to a higher quality of human well-being. The current tradeoff involves packing perishable foods in trays made from PET, PP, or HDPE and then sealing them with LDPE or PET film. Unfortunately, a paucity of these food trays reaches recycling plants. This is because food contact may taint recyclables.

Most perishable food packaging is made from sheet. The good news is that the same resin Lastic® uses to make straws is also used to produce sheet. Prototypes include trays for meats, platters for vegetables and sushi, and take-out boxes of all varieties.
