The Bamboo Press 31: The Dishwasher Test

Updated: May 12, 2023

Because products made from Lastic Bamboo Resin can survive continuous dishwasher cycles, they aren't classified as single-use items.
Lastic Products Are Biodegradable and Reusable

One of the many reasons customers purchase Lastic products is because they're proven to be compostable. We've written exhaustively about Lastic's Home and Garden Compostable Certification from DIN CERTCO and its Commercially Compostable Certification from the BPI Institute.

These acclaimed certifications allow consumers to discard used Lastic products into their home and garden compost piles or commercial composting bins. While we advocate for closed-loop consumption by contributing used Lastic products to composting schemes, users can also discard used Lastic products into public trashcans. Lastic products will biodegrade when landfilled because they don't need constantly high temperatures to do so.

One thing that astonishes many customers is that Lastic products aren't designed for single use. Lastic straws, utensils, and food boxes have the resiliency for reuse. As a result, consumers can hand-wash or even place their used Lastic products into the dishwasher and then store them for reuse!

Some people will ask, "But won't a dishwasher's sanitation cycle melt my used Lastic products? And aren't Lastic products inherently flimsy and weak because they're biodegradable?" The answer to both questions is a hard no.

We've emphasized that the Lastic engineering team has designed a resilient product using a non-patented, secret recipe that involves bamboo, bio-based PBS, and starch. The engineering team aimed to develop not only a biodegradable product but also one that consumers can use over and over.

Lastic and Island Leaf are absolute sticklers when it comes to certifications. We don't say our product can withstand the high heat cycles present in all dishwashers unless we've got 3rd-party agency approval. So, we contracted SGS to test Lastic straws and utensils under the 25-Cycle Standard that European resellers and manufacturers accept for dishwasher-safe approval.

What dishwasher-testing procedure did SGS follow? Using a Bosch dishwasher and 25ml of Cascade detergent, SGS ran the straws and utensils through 25 cycles. An entire cycle lasts for 120 minutes. It includes a rinse, wash, and dry period, with a 65°C maximum temperature.

After the 25 cycles concluded, (that's 50 hours for all the mathematicians), SGS found the straws and utensils did not melt or deform. These findings have significant implications for Lastic straws and utensils.

First, making it through the dishwasher test unscathed means Lastic straws and utensils are not single-use items. Even though Lastic has designed its products with home and garden compostability as the primary goal, Lastic has created a significantly resilient, all-natural, non-toxic plastic alternative that consumers can reuse. But, when consumers expose straws and utensils to backyard composting environments, they will biodegrade swiftly.

Secondly, some countries and cities have completely banned single-use plastics and products. The fact that Lastic straws and utensils are reusable because they beat the dishwasher test ostensibly qualifies them as acceptable in single-use-plastic-ban-enacting cities and countries.

Lastic products are tough enough for reuse after the dishwasher yet kind enough to safely biodegrade into your backyard compost pile. Contact us today for more information!
