The Bamboo Press 25: What's Inside FSC Paper (besides Lastic straws and utensils)?

Updated: May 11, 2023

The Forest Stewardship Council, or FSC, ensures paper bearing its certification is harvested in sustainable ways.
FSC Paper: Stringently Sustainable

Qualifying as a sustainable, environmentally-friendly company is no easy task. Besides offering a truly environmentally friendly product, a company must ensure it manufactures its goods cleanly and packages them in compostable or easily recyclable material with a sustainable origin.

For biodegradable-straw producers, packaging is of the utmost importance. This is especially true for companies that sell take-out drinks. Straws used for take-out consumption must be packaged singularly and in a manner that guarantees sanitation.

Many take-out-drink sellers provide straws individually wrapped in plastic film. We've all used straws packaged this way. Unfortunately, these thin plastic sheaths rarely get recycled. Some of them end up in landfills, where, after 500 years, they fully biodegrade. Others go the unfortunate route and end up in the natural environment, causing harm to animal, plant, and microbial life.

We're aware of the conundrum that providing take-out single straws causes. Luckily, we found a sustainable solution: using Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) paper for individual straw wrapping. The FSC recognizes that humanity must use forest products, like wood from trees, to maintain civilization. However, the FSC advocates that humanity must extract forest-based resources responsibly, sustainably, and in a non-damaging way.

FSC paper is made from sustainably-sourced trees. For a paper-packaging company to earn FSC Certification, it must surpass several rigorously enforced FSC principles. One such principle requires paper-packaging companies to demonstrate that they source wood in a manner that doesn't harm the forest from which it came. Another standard demands companies to show that they do not cause significant harm to animal life during the wood-harvesting process.

Lastic packages all its individually-wrapped straws in FSC Certified paper.
A Lastic Straw in FSC Paper

Lastic uses FSC paper to package individual straws and 4-in-1 take-out utensil sets. The thin FSC paper will biodegrade in a few months.

Ultimately, to make a truly sustainable product, the packaging in which it comes must be sustainable as well. So, for companies looking to switch from non-sustainable straws or utensils, Lastic products are the best way to go.
