The Bamboo Press 36: A Quick Guide to Spotting Compostable Imposters

Updated: May 12, 2023

PLA is not a home and garden compostable plastic. Many industrial composting facilities reject it.
The Poser King

Over the past two or three years, a conglomeration of purported biodegradable plastics and products has sprung up in restaurants and retail outlets across the US and other countries. Many of these products claim to be "backyard compostable" or "home compostable." Ultimately, materials like this are compostable imposters.

Enter the Island Leaf Team. Today, we're playing the role for wannabe-biodegradable plastics that Nouriel Roubini plays for global financial markets: Dr. Doom.

Please don't mistake our cynical nature for extreme-compostable-product denier. Indeed, Island Leaf Commodities is the exclusive sales agent for Lastic Bamboo Resin and products. These are all certified home and garden compostable as well as commercially compostable.

Unfortunately, there's much false information about alleged "biodegradable" products flying around restaurants, groceries stores, and the interwebs like winged pigs. Most of these "biodegradable" straws and utensils don't have any home and garden compostable certification...because these products can't pass DIN CERTCO's, BPI's, or OK! Compostable's certification standards.

Just how can consumers weed out these poser products? Back in October of 2022, we wrote an instructional outlining steps consumers can take to avoid purchasing biodegradable-posing products.

In sum, we advocated that consumers exercise extra caution when a producer creates an inordinate amount of marketing copy calling out the plastic pollution crisis. While all producers should do more than touch on the plastic pollution crisis, they should also present how using their products will contribute to the planet's well-being. These products must also clearly show that they have earned third-party biodegradation certificates. Producers must explicitly show their products' certification numbers with each certifying agency. Finally, consumers should sneer at and never purchase products that make up their own titles, like "Backyard Compostable."

In the future, we'll be creating more content that further breaks down material that can't biologically break down. So if you have any wisdom to contribute about products that aren't home and garden compostable, like PLA, send us a message!
