Decades of single-use plastic consumption, coupled with scarce recycling infrastructure, have greatly contributed to massive environmental devastation. One particularly virulent single-use plastic product is the common drinking straw.
In the United States alone, consumers use over 500 million straws daily. Unfortunately, most single-use plastic straws do not get recycled, meaning they take up landfill space or get discarded into the environment, eventually ending up in the ocean.
Luckily, a few US cities have moved to ban plastic straws. Moreover, by 2023, Canada plans to significantly restrict single-use plastic straws. But people will still demand straws for convenient drinking and stirring. So, what are the viable and environmentally-friendly replacements?
We've already written about the pitfalls of bagasse and PLA straws, two major single-use straw types which producers fictitiously market as "environmentally friendly". In contrast to PLA and bagasse straws, Lastic ones are the perfect plastic straw replacements.
First and foremost, Lastic straws have a mouthfeel similar to traditional-plastic straws. After putting a Lastic straw in his or her mouth, the beverage drinker won’t get the immediate uncomfortably-drying vexation caused by paper straws. Lastic straws also don't become soggy, either. Like plastic straws, beverage drinkers can bend and bite on Lastic straws without having to worry about damaging them. Consumers can even wash Lastic straws and use them again.
We've vehemently stated that Lastic straws are certified biodegradable and compostable. Last year, DIN CERTO affirmed that all Lastic straws are compostable and biodegradable. But the bio-certifications do not end here.
Recently, a major bio-certification company awarded Lastic with yet another credential. In early July of 2022 the American-based BPI (Biodegradable Products Institute) officially certified Lastic straws as both biodegradable and compostable. So now, we've got two highly-respected companies that guarantee Lastic straws' ability to compost and biodegrade in under 255 days.
Refreshingly, Lastic doesn't just produce standard drinking straws. Clients can buy standard straws, standard-sharp-ended straws, fat-sharp-ended bubble tea straws, standard-bendy straws, bendy-juice-box straws, and cocktail straws.
With the environment in mind, Lastic packages each straw in simple, highly-recyclable and environmentally friendly Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper. Lastic places all the individual straws in a clear, bulk, BOPP plastic bag (which can be recycled as pre-consumer material) and then encloses the bag in a paper carton. If customers do not want to pack the straws in the plastic bag, Lastic can indeed accommodate their needs and forgo this packaging.
