The Bamboo Press 2: Never Patent Pending

Updated: May 11, 2023

This is a patent stamp.
No Patents for Lastic

Last week, we introduced the Bamboo Press to the world and gave a brief overview of Lastic Bamboo Resin and Island Leaf Commodities' new role in marketing and selling this elite-grade biodegradable material.

Lastic Bamboo Resin is truly one-of-a-kind, and, over the past several months, we have written extensively about Lastic on our LinkedIn business page.

It's of paramount importance to disclose the fact that Lastic does not own patents on either its bamboo resin or the process that creates the bamboo resin. Why will Lastic never be patent pending?

Although a patent allows a company to hold exclusive rights on the product for a number of years, the patent eventually expires, giving several other players free rein to copy, produce, and sell the original product—a product whose founders toiled to develop. This is because when a company applies for a patent, it must divulge precise ingredient and design information as well as the production process. Because of this, Lastic's founders aren't falling head-over-heels in love with the idea of giving up their exact ingredients, design, and production process in exchange for legally protected production rights that expire after a few years.

Currently, no company in the world (that we know of) is producing a high-quality, bio-based and completely-compostable-compound-resin plastic substitute like Lastic Bamboo Resin. In the future, other companies might develop a biodegradable, plant-based resin similar to that of Lastic's. However, Lastic's founders and engineering team endured significant pains as they labored to both perfect their product and secure not-insignificant capital to fund creating Lastic Bamboo Resin. Thus, Lastic prefers to keep all production secrets to itself.

But how could a company invent such a game-changing product and then not make moves to secure its production (for a few years) legally exclusively? How could they do it, you ask? First, of course, Lastic will never apply for a patent—but the better question is, has any company created an original, classic product yet never patented that product?

The answer is yes. Although it has made a few adjustments to its original 1886 recipe, the beverage behemoth Coca-Cola has never applied for nor has ever possessed a patent. Coca-Cola treats its product as a trade secret. And quite a few rivals have emerged during Coca-Cola's 130-plus year lifespan—but none of them have entirely replicated Coca-Cola's recipe, keeping Coca-Cola original.

Like Coca-Cola, it is thus Lastic's plan to maintain a prominent sense of quaint uniqueness.

Keeping Lastic's ingredients and production capacity a trade secret is essential to further develop markets for this biodegradable material.

Next week, we'll talk about the ingredients used to make Lastic Bamboo Resin. In the meantime, visit our LinkedIn page for more information about the compostable and biodegradable Lastic Bamboo Resin.
