The Bamboo Press 32: Bamboo Part Deux - Makino Bamboo

Updated: May 12, 2023

Lastic uses the endemic-to-Taiwan, carbon-absorbing Makino Bamboo as a critical ingredient for Lastic Bamboo Resin.

In past issues of The Bamboo Press, we've emphasized that Lastic Bamboo Resin's ingredients are non-toxic and all-natural. As we've said before, Lastic uses just a few ingredients to concoct its exceptionally innovative, home and garden compostable Lastic Bamboo Resin. While Lastic will never divulge its non-patented recipe and compounding method, it emphasizes the core ingredients that compose Lastic Bamboo Resin: bio-based PBS, starch, and bamboo.

In August 2022, we wrote an edition of The Bamboo Press introducing bio-based PBS. And a week later, we also discussed why the Lastic Engineering Team decided to use endemic-to-Taiwan, carbon-absorbing bamboo as a compounding agent.

So today, we're delving deeper into the bamboo forest. We'll discuss and laud the bamboo species that Lastic uses for compounding: Makino Bamboo.

Bamboo grows naturally in Asia, Oceania, Africa, South America, and even North America (home to three species). In sum, there are over 1,000 naturally occurring bamboo species worldwide. Technically, bamboo is grass. So, bamboo is a sustainable plant—just like grass, bamboo will quickly regrow after it's been cut, allowing people to harvest the stalks stemming from a particular root about three years after it sprouts. The species Lastic uses to produce its Lastic Bamboo Resin is Phyllostachys makinoi or Makino Bamboo. Makino Bamboo is one bamboo type that grows abundantly throughout Taiwan.

The act of growing Makino Bamboo benefits the earth. Scientists have found that Makino Bamboo is an effective carbon sink and could pull more carbon dioxide out of the air than trees. Makino bamboo does this because it continually grows upwards, sometimes to over 10 meters. Remember, bamboo is grass, growing akin to backyard lawns.

Overall, Makino Bamboo has excellent properties that make it a primary player in achieving a closed-loop economy. Not only does it serve as the crucial compounding agent for Lastic Bamboo Resin, it's also native to where Lastic Bamboo Resin is made and effectively pulls carbon from the air. So, Makino Bamboo is solid ingredient for compounding and sustainability.
