Last month, we received monumental news. DIN CERTCO, a German-based testing and certification agency, awarded Lastic with the Home and Garden Compostability Certificate for its Bamboo Resin. Now, we can officially say that products made from the compostable Lastic Bamboo Resin will contribute to the regular consumer's home compost pile!
How exactly does DIN CERTCO determine that a material is home and garden compostable? To earn DIN CERTCO's Home and Garden Compostability Certification, a product must meet these five standards:
1. The product's exact ingredients must be fully disclosed. There are limitations on how many heavy metals a product can have. If a product has too many heavy metals (i.e. non-organic material), it's immediately disqualified.
2. This is the biodegradation test. After six months in an aqueous medium/environment, at least 90% of the product's organic material must have been converted to CO2.
3. Now for the compostability test. After being placed in a compost pile at an ambient temperature for 180 days, no more than 10% of the original product can remain in the pile.
4. While composting, the product itself is tested to see if it inhibits the composting process. If so, the product fails.
5. Finally, after composting concludes, a test is conducted to find if the resulting compost contains toxins that would damage plant and animal (including insect) life.
Lastic Bamboo Resin received full credit on all five sections.
Obtaining this certification confirms that products made purely from Lastic Bamboo Resin will biodegrade homemade-compost piles. Thus, scientifically sound testing methodology has proven an important point: biodegradable Lastic Bamboo Resin fortifies garden soil.
As mentioned above, the biodegradation process must take no more than six months. However, we've had clients inform us that Lastic products have decomposed into their home compost piles in less time.
