The Bamboo Press 39 - Hittin' the Sheet

Updated: May 12, 2023

Lastic Bamboo Extrusion resin can be used to produce a variety of sheet applications.
A Lastic Thermoform Application

Since the inception of The Bamboo Press in May of 2022, the Island Leaf Team has created thousands of words of content about the home and garden, as well as commercially, compostable Lastic Bamboo Resin. Of course, we've focused much attention on straws—straws are, after all, the Lastic flagship product—but we've also touched on other applications.

We've mentioned Lastic's desire to raid the food box space. In Taiwan, Lastic has already made significant strides on the food box front by providing home and garden compostable food boxes for Costco Taiwan. However, we're looking to disrupt the plastic and paper-dominated food packaging norm drastically.

Currently, people in the United States alone use nearly nine million metric tons—that's nine megatons—of single-use packaging annually. These numbers are not sustainable. Luckily, switching to Lastic products is.

The challenge is that all packaging is not created equal. Unlike the relative ubiquity of straws, food packaging consists of a dizzying array of specified variants, each with unique dimensions. For example, there are salad boxes, burger boxes, slider boxes, sushi boxes, and fry boxes…you get it. However, almost any vacuum-pressed or thermoformed application is possible because of the strong relationship Lastic has formed with Relocks, its Taiwan-based food box producer.

Relocks has over 30 years of industry experience. Not only can they mass produce almost any type of vacuum pressed or thermoform application, but they can also produce the molds needed for new packaging ideas. For instance, when a client visited recently, he needed a specific dimension of a food box that Relocks didn't make. Using previous boxes and measuring devices to guide him, he dictated the required measurements to the Relocks team, who drew up notes for a mold to produce his prototypes. Typically, a prototype mold runs about USD $500.

We're very excited to have partnered with such a knowledgeable and adaptable company. So, let us know what your elusive packaging need is, and we'll discover a compostable solution!
