The Bamboo Press 52: Food-Waste Solutions

Transforming Food-Waste to Fertilizer

Because we're advocates for Lastic® Bamboo Resin and BAMBOO products, we're also advocates for home and garden composting. We've emphasized several reasons why home and garden compostable Lastic® Bamboo Resin and BAMBOO products are among the most environmentally friendly single-use plastics.

A critical feature of Lastic® Bamboo Resin is its compostability time in home and garden conditions. Under AS5810 and NF T51-800:2015 standards, confirmed respectively by the Australasian Bioplastics Association and DIN CERTCO, BAMBOO products biodegrade under home and garden conditions in fewer than six months. However, we also advocate for simple machinery that households and businesses can leverage to accelerate BAMBOO products' biodegradation process.

What is this machinery, and how does it hasten biodegradation? Known as "food-waste processors," these machines range from about the size of an air fryer to industrial-sized ones capable of holding several tons of volume. Users put food waste inside, then switch the machine on for a 24-hour cycle. At the end of the process, a nutrient-rich "pre-compost" remains. The pre-compost must ferment outside in an open-air bin for about ten to fourteen days before it can be used as fertilizer.

Inside a Food-Waste Processor: Pre-Compost

How do used BAMBOO products apply to these machines? When consumers shred used BAMBOO products and put them into a food-waste processor, the BAMBOO shred assimilates with the food waste inside the machines. Constant heat from the machines (about 50°C-60°C) expedites the biodegradation process. After BAMBOO products have run through a 24-hour cycle, biodegradation time dramatically decreases from a few months to about two weeks.

Two months ago, we published a long-form content piece that dove into how businesses in Taiwan are localizing waste management. Food-waste processors are a critical tool for initiating and maintaining a closed-loop economy.
