The Bamboo Press 46: Lastic® Food Boxes: Replacing PLA and Plastic

For many years, most food and beverage industry players have used the same difficult-to-recycle food packaging. While most of this packaging is made using HDPE, PET, or PP packaging, food contamination complicates its recyclability. Even worse, restaurants and meat packagers have relied on poly-styrene, a soft yet environmentally detrimental, plastic packaging.


After communicating with several packaging makers—not just in the United States but also in Europe, India, and Taiwan— we've learned one thing. Packaging producers are scrambling to find environmentally friendly, plastic-similar replacements.


It's important to note that many of these producers are familiar with the pitfalls of poly-lactic acid (PLA) and are avoiding it at all costs. But, unfortunately, PLA is not environmentally friendly, as it doesn't biodegrade, so replacing PLA is absolutely necessary. Luckily, we've got a viable alternative: Lastic® home and garden compostable food boxes.


While our flagship products are indeed straws, food boxes have gained heaps of customer interest. Indeed, we've received feedback from major packaging producers about the Lastic food boxes' feasibility and functionality. We can safely conclude that our food boxes have seduced many a' packaging manufacturer.


How have Lastic® food boxes unlocked production engineers' hearts? First, all Lastic® food boxes are DIN CERTCO H&G compostable and BPI World Commercially Compostable. As we said before, many packaging producers are catching on to the truth that PLA is neither compostable nor environmentally friendly. And making these boxes is easy due to the high -versatility exhibited by the raw material used to produce food boxes: Lastic® Extrusion Resin.


Secondly, Lastic food boxes feel, function, and perform similarly to PP and HDPE-made ones. Another significant indicator that proves strength, performance, and structural integrity is that Relocks®, the Lastic® food box OEM, can produce their patented locking take-out food boxes and food packaging by thermoforming Lastic® sheet. Once again, the flexible functionality exhibited by Lastic® sheet allows for the Relocks® patented hinging and locking mechanisms to function.
